She took three steps.

“I said I don’t need help.”
“You did.”
“I didn’t say I don’t enjoy it.”
Together, we crossed the threshold.
Martha locked the door behind us.
Then she hung the key beside the old one on the wall.
One key represented the night her fear ended.
The other represented every morning she chose what came next.
And in the house with the yellow curtains, tomorrow was no longer something done to us.
It was something we opened ourselves.
