I carried his child in secret after our divorce until the day I went into labor and the doctor took off his mask.

“Doctor?”
The nurse’s voice pulled him back.
He blinked.
“I’m fine.”
“You don’t look fine.”
Another contraction ripped through me before I could say anything.
I cried out and squeezed the nurse’s hand.
“Chloe, look at me.”
I tried.
I really tried.
But all I could see was Ethan.
The man I had spent years loving.
The man whose shirts I used to steal because they smelled like him.
The man who knew exactly how I liked my coffee.
The man who used to put his cold feet against my legs in bed just to make me scream.
The man who had once told me that if we ever had a daughter, he’d teach her how to dance before she could walk.
And the man who had signed the divorce papers.
My husband.
My stranger.
My baby’s father.
“Push,” the nurse said.
