Emma tried to keep the conversation balanced. She asked Roger about his work.

Brandon’s mouth closed.

For the first time, Diane’s face slipped.

I caught it.

I filed it away.

“Henry,” Diane said, lowering her voice into something soft and wounded, “I understand if this feels like a lot.”

“But Brandon is marrying up.”
