She walked toward the safe.
Every footstep echoed through the lobby.
When she reached it…
She closed her eyes.
For several seconds…
She said nothing.
Then…
Her posture changed.
Her shoulders straightened.
Her voice became deeper.
Calmer.
Confident.
It wasn’t perfect.
But it was close enough to make my heart ache.
She sounded…
Like Frank.
She looked directly at the scanner and spoke clearly.
“The strongest vault is never built from steel.
It’s built from truth.”
Silence.
One second.
Two.
Three.
The red light flashed.
Everyone held their breath.
Then…
GREEN.
A soft mechanical click echoed inside the safe.
The heavy steel bolts slowly retracted.
The lid unlocked.
No one moved.
Daniel whispered,
“My God…”
Charles removed his glasses.
“I never knew…”
The safe slowly opened by itself.
Inside…
There was no cash.
No gold.
No jewelry.
Only three things.
A thick leather binder.
A small velvet box.
And a single video recorder.
Across the recorder…
Frank had attached another handwritten note.
PLAY THIS FIRST.
Jackson reached for it.
His hands were shaking so badly…
He almost dropped it.
Daniel connected it to a nearby monitor that firefighters had brought into the lobby.
The screen flickered.
Static.
Then…
Frank appeared.
He looked older.
Thinner.
His hair was almost completely gray.
Cancer had already taken its toll.
But his smile…
Was exactly the same.
He looked directly into the camera.
“If you’re watching this…”
“…then I’ve already lost my fight.”
Tears filled my eyes.
“I hoped you would never need this recording.”
“But hope…”
“…is not a strategy.”
He smiled softly.
“So I made one.”
Frank leaned forward.
“Margaret…”
“I know you’ll blame yourself.”
“Don’t.”
“You loved people.”
“That’s never a mistake.”
He turned toward the camera again.
“Jackson…”
“If you’re beside your mother…”
“…it means you finally found your way home.”
Jackson broke down.
He covered his face with both hands.
“I’m sorry, Dad…”
Frank continued.
“I also know Natalie may be standing there.”
Natalie froze.
“If you are…”
“…then I want you to hear something your father asked me to tell you.”
Everyone looked at Natalie.
Frank reached into his pocket.
He unfolded an old piece of paper.
“This letter was written by Richard Collins three days before he died.”
Natalie’s knees nearly gave way.
“He begged me never to destroy your life with his shame.”
“So I promised him…”
“…that if the day ever came…”
“…I would tell you exactly what he wrote.”
Frank began reading.
‘My precious Natalie…’
‘If you grow up believing Frank Harrison ruined us…’
‘Do not seek revenge.’
‘I made my own mistakes.’
‘Frank paid for them with his fortune.’
‘He gave me more mercy than I deserved.’
‘If you ever meet him…’
‘Tell him thank you for loving our family after I failed them.’
Natalie collapsed onto the floor.
She sobbed so hard…
She couldn’t breathe.
Everything she had believed for years…
Had died in a single minute.
Frank looked back into the camera.
“But this recording isn’t about the past.”
“It’s about tomorrow.”
Daniel frowned.
“What?”
Frank smiled.
“If Victor is alive…”
“…then he isn’t working alone.”
The room became silent again.
“He never trusted people.”
“He trusted leverage.”
“He always placed one person…”
“…where nobody would think to look.”
Charles looked confused.
“The board?”
Frank slowly shook his head.
“No.”
“The family.”
My heart stopped.
Frank looked directly into the camera.
“The person who has been reporting everything to Victor…”
“…shares Harrison blood.”
Silence.
Jackson whispered,
“What?”
Frank’s eyes filled the screen.
“I finally learned the truth two weeks before I died.”
“I ordered DNA testing.”
“I never had time to tell anyone.”
Daniel slowly stood.
His face had gone white.
“No…”
Frank spoke the final sentence.
“Jackson…”
“…you have a brother.”
The screen went black.
No one moved.
No one spoke.
Every person in the lobby stared at Jackson.
He looked at me.
His lips trembled.
“I…”
“…have a brother?”
Just then…
A slow clap echoed through the smoke-filled lobby.
Everyone turned toward the shattered front entrance.
A young man, no older than thirty, stepped inside wearing a perfectly tailored black suit.
He smiled at Jackson.
Then said the words that froze every soul in the room.
“Hello, little brother.”
PART 14 — THE SECOND SON
The lobby fell into complete silence.
The only sound was the hiss of water dripping from the fire sprinklers.
The young man stood confidently in the shattered entrance.
He looked no older than thirty.
Dark hair.
Gray-blue eyes.
Broad shoulders.
There was something strangely familiar about him.
Not because I knew him…
But because he reminded me of Frank when he was young.
Jackson stared.
“I don’t know you.”
The stranger smiled.
“I know.”
He took one slow step forward.
“My name is Adrian.”
His eyes never left Jackson.
“Adrian Sterling.”
Daniel Mercer immediately stepped in front of us.
“Stay where you are.”
Adrian raised both hands.
“I’m not here to fight.”
“I’m here because Frank asked me to come.”
Charles frowned.
“Impossible.”
“Frank never mentioned another son.”
Adrian nodded sadly.
“He couldn’t.”
“He promised my mother he never would.”
Jackson looked completely overwhelmed.
“My father would never hide another child.”
Adrian didn’t argue.
Instead…
He reached into his jacket.
Everyone tensed.
He slowly removed an old photograph.
The edges were faded.
The colors nearly gone.
He handed it to Jackson.
“This was taken thirty-one years ago.”
Jackson looked down.
His breathing stopped.
Standing in the photograph…
Was Frank.
Young.
Laughing.
Holding a baby.
Beside him stood a beautiful woman I had never seen.
Across the bottom…
Written in Frank’s handwriting…
“Our little Adrian.”
The photograph slipped from Jackson’s fingers.
“No…”
He whispered.
“This can’t be real.”
I forced myself to speak.
“Who is your mother?”
Adrian looked at me.
“Her name was Evelyn Brooks.”
The name hit me like lightning.
Brooks.
Natalie’s last name.
Natalie looked up from the floor.
Confused.
“My last name…”
Adrian nodded.
“Our mothers were sisters.”
Natalie stared at him.
“So…”
“…you’re my cousin.”
Adrian smiled sadly.
“Yes.”
“We’ve been family our entire lives.”
“You just never knew.”
Daniel folded his arms.
“You’re avoiding the real question.”
Adrian nodded.
“I know.”
He looked directly at me.
“Frank Harrison wasn’t my biological father.”
Silence.
“He adopted me.”
The entire room froze.
“I was four years old.”
“My parents died in a car accident.”
“My aunt Evelyn couldn’t afford to raise me.”
“So Frank stepped in.”
“He paid for everything.”
“My education.”
“My home.”
“My future.”
“He never asked for anything in return.”
I felt tears welling in my eyes.
That sounded exactly like Frank.
Doing something extraordinary…
And telling no one.
Jackson slowly picked up the old photograph.
“Why didn’t he tell me?”
Adrian smiled.
“He wanted to.”
“But I asked him not to.”
“You?”
“I didn’t want to become the reason another child felt replaced.”
Jackson lowered his eyes.
“You thought I’d hate you.”
“I thought you’d deserve your father all to yourself.”
Neither of them spoke.
Then…
Jackson crossed the room.
He stopped directly in front of Adrian.
For several seconds…
Neither man moved.
Then Jackson held out his hand.
Instead of shaking it…
Adrian pulled him into a hug.
Jackson didn’t resist.
For the first time since the wedding…
He cried openly.
Not from anger.
Not from betrayal.
But from relief.
Natalie watched silently.
Fresh tears rolled down her face.
“I destroyed this family…”
she whispered.
“No.”
The voice came from behind us.
Everyone turned.
It was Daniel.
“You damaged it.”
“But someone else planned its destruction.”
He walked toward the leather binder inside the safe.
“We’re forgetting something.”
Frank hadn’t hidden only the recording.
There was still the thick leather binder.
Daniel carefully opened it.
The first page contained a title.
PROJECT PHOENIX
Below it…
A handwritten note.
If Victor is arrested…
Open the final section immediately.
Daniel turned the pages.
Dozens of documents.
Financial records.
Secret investigations.
Board member profiles.
Then…
Near the end…
He stopped.
His face turned white.
Charles looked over his shoulder.
“Oh, no…”
“What?”
Daniel slowly lifted one document.
It was tomorrow’s emergency board meeting agenda.
Every board member’s name was listed.
One by one.
Each had a red check mark beside it.
Except one.
Only one name remained uncrossed.
Daniel whispered,
“He never finished.”
I stepped closer.
“Finished what?”
Daniel looked directly at me.
“Frank identified every person working for Victor…”
“…except one.”
The final name on the list was covered with black ink.
Only two handwritten words appeared beneath it.
TRUST NO ONE.
Before anyone could speak…
The emergency exit door burst open.
A soaked firefighter ran into the lobby.
He was out of breath.
“Mrs. Harrison!”
“What is it?”
He swallowed hard.
“We found a survivor…”
“…inside Mr. Harrison’s private office.”
The room fell silent.
I stared at him.
“That’s impossible.”
The firefighter nodded.
“We thought so too.”
“He refuses to tell us his name.”
“He only keeps repeating one sentence.”
“What sentence?”
The firefighter looked directly at me.
“He says…”
‘Tell Margaret… I kept my promise to Frank.’
PART 15 — THE MAN IN THE ASHES
For a long moment…
No one moved.
The firefighter stood in the doorway, soaked from head to toe.
His helmet was blackened with soot.
His breathing was ragged.
“We found him trapped behind a collapsed wall.”
Daniel frowned.
“Who is he?”
The firefighter shook his head.
“He refuses to identify himself.”
“He only keeps saying…”
‘I kept my promise to Frank.’
Charles’ face suddenly changed.
He whispered,
“No…”
“It couldn’t be.”
We hurried toward the elevators.
Smoke still drifted through the upper floors.
Emergency lights flashed red across the hallways.
The thirty-second floor looked like a battlefield.
Water poured from broken pipes.
Glass covered the carpets.
The smell of burned wood and melted plastic filled the air.
Firefighters led us toward Frank’s former office.
Or what remained of it.
Half the room had collapsed.
The massive mahogany desk Frank loved was split in two.
Family photographs were scattered everywhere.
Yet…
One section of the office remained strangely untouched.
Behind the hidden wall where the steel safe had been concealed…
Sat an elderly man wrapped in a thermal blanket.
His face was covered in ash.
His gray beard hid most of his features.
One arm was badly burned.
But his eyes…
His eyes were sharp.
Watching.
Waiting.
When he saw me…
He smiled.
“I knew you’d come.”
I stopped walking.
“I know you…”
He nodded.
“You should.”
“My name…”
“…is Samuel Brooks.”
Natalie gasped.
“No…”
She stumbled backward.
“My grandfather?”
Samuel slowly looked toward her.
“My little Natalie.”
The room froze.
“You…”
“…you’re alive?”
Samuel smiled sadly.
“Barely.”
Natalie dropped to her knees.
“My father told me…”
“…you died before I was born.”
Samuel closed his eyes.
“Your father lied.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Richard Collins lied too?”
Samuel shook his head.
“No.”
“Richard believed I was dead.”
Everyone stared.
Samuel took a painful breath.
“Victor made sure of that.”
Charles knelt beside him.
“What happened?”
Samuel looked toward the broken window.
“Thirty-two years ago…”
“I discovered Victor was stealing from Harrison Global.”
“I told Frank.”
“I told Richard.”
“We were going to expose him.”
He coughed violently.
Blood stained the blanket.
“But Victor learned we knew.”
The room remained silent.
“He arranged an accident.”
“My car went into the river.”
“Everyone believed I drowned.”
Natalie covered her mouth.
Samuel looked at her.
“I survived.”
“But Victor couldn’t risk me returning.”
“So…”
“…he locked me away.”
Jackson frowned.
“Locked you away?”
Samuel nodded.
“For twenty-nine years.”
The words echoed through the ruined office.
No one could believe what they had just heard.
Daniel whispered,
“My God…”
Samuel continued.
“Victor owned private properties.”
“Old warehouses.”
“Abandoned estates.”
“I was moved from place to place.”
“He told everyone I was dead.”
“He told my family I’d abandoned them.”
Tears rolled down Natalie’s face.
“I spent my whole life believing…”
“…you didn’t love us.”
Samuel reached for her trembling hand.
“I loved you every single day.”
“I just couldn’t reach you.”
Natalie collapsed against him, sobbing.
“I’m so sorry…”
“I’m so sorry…”
Samuel gently stroked her hair.
“None of this was your fault.”
I looked toward Daniel.
“How did he escape?”
Samuel smiled weakly.
“I didn’t.”
Everyone looked confused.
“I was rescued.”
“By who?”
Samuel turned toward me.
“Frank.”
Silence.
“He found me.”
“When?”
“Six years ago.”
The exact same year Frank began preparing Protocol Phoenix.
Samuel nodded.
“He found me in an abandoned farmhouse.”
“I was dying.”
“He carried me out himself.”
I felt tears burning my eyes.
“Why didn’t he tell me?”
Samuel smiled.
“He wanted to.”
“But I begged him not to.”
“Why?”
“Because Victor didn’t know Frank had found me.”
“If Victor discovered I was alive…”
“…he’d disappear forever.”
Daniel slowly understood.
“So Frank hid you.”
Samuel nodded.
“In a place only three people knew.”
“You.”
“Charles.”
“And Adrian.”
Charles looked stunned.
“I visited you every month…”
Samuel smiled.
“You kept your promise.”
Then he looked directly at me.
“The promise wasn’t to protect me.”
“It was to protect you.”
Samuel slowly reached inside the blanket wrapped around his shoulders.
Everyone instinctively stepped forward.
Instead of a weapon…
He removed an old leather notebook.
It looked almost identical to Frank’s journal.
He handed it to me.
“I’ve waited twenty-nine years…”
“…to give you this.”
I opened the cover.
Every page was filled with names.
Dates.
Transactions.
Secret meetings.
Photographs.
It wasn’t a diary.
It was evidence.
Three decades of evidence.
Against Victor Sterling.
Daniel’s hands trembled as he turned the pages.
“This…”
“…this is enough to convict half the people on the board.”
Samuel nodded.
“It gets worse.”
He pointed to the final page.
“There.”
I looked down.
At the bottom…
One name had been circled in red ink.
Not Victor.
Not Richard.
Not Natalie.
Not Charles.
Just one name.
JACKSON HARRISON.
My heart stopped.
“What is this?”
Samuel looked directly into my son’s eyes.
“Victor chose Jackson…”
“…before he was even born.”
The room fell silent.
Jackson stared in disbelief.
“What are you talking about?”
Samuel took one slow breath.
Then whispered the sentence that changed everything.
“Victor wasn’t trying to steal your father’s company…”
“…he was trying to steal Frank’s heir.”
PART 16 — THE HEIR THEY WANTED TO OWN
The room fell silent.
No one dared speak.
Samuel Brooks’ words hung in the air like smoke.
“Victor wasn’t trying to steal your father’s company…”
“…he was trying to steal Frank’s heir.”
Jackson stared at him.
“I don’t understand.”
Samuel slowly closed the notebook.
“Victor never believed companies lasted forever.”
“He believed people did.”
“He didn’t want Harrison Global.”
“He wanted the person who would inherit it.”
Daniel frowned.
“Jackson?”
Samuel nodded.
“From the day Frank told Victor he was going to become a father…”
“…Victor started planning.”
Charles looked stunned.
“Planning what?”
Samuel answered without hesitation.
“Control.”
“He couldn’t control Frank.”
“So he decided…”
“…he would control Frank’s son.”
Jackson laughed nervously.
“That’s impossible.”
“I’ve never even met him.”
Samuel looked directly into his eyes.
“Oh…”
“You’ve met him many times.”
The room froze.
“What?”
“He attended your birthday parties.”
“He came to your high school graduation.”
“He shook your hand when you accepted your first promotion.”
Jackson’s face turned pale.
“No…”
Samuel nodded.
“He never came as Victor Sterling.”
“He came as someone else.”
Daniel quickly opened Samuel’s notebook.
“Do you know the name?”
Samuel pointed toward a page near the middle.
Daniel flipped through.
Stopped.
His breathing changed.
He whispered,
“My God…”
Charles leaned over.
His own face lost all color.
Jackson stepped forward.
“What is it?”
Daniel slowly turned the notebook around.
A photograph.
Twenty-two years old.
Jackson’s tenth birthday.
I remembered that party.
Frank had rented the lake house.
Nearly one hundred guests.
Employees.
Friends.
Neighbors.
Children everywhere.
Daniel pointed toward a smiling man standing behind Jackson.
He wore sunglasses.
A baseball cap.
One arm rested casually on Jackson’s shoulder.
I had never noticed him before.
Daniel whispered,
“That’s Victor.”
Jackson stared at the picture.
“He…”
“…was standing beside me.”
Samuel nodded.
“He watched you grow up.”
“He knew your favorite baseball team.”
“He knew where you went to college.”
“He knew every girlfriend you ever had.”
“He knew every business decision you made.”
“He knew everything.”
I felt physically sick.
For decades…
Victor hadn’t been attacking our company.
He had been studying my son.
Natalie whispered,
“So…”
“…meeting Jackson wasn’t my idea.”
Samuel slowly looked at her.
“No.”
She closed her eyes.
“My father introduced me to Victor six months before he died.”
“He said there was a man who wanted to help me.”
Samuel nodded sadly.
“Victor chose you.”
Daniel looked at Natalie.
“You never selected Jackson.”
Natalie shook her head through tears.
“I was told where to go.”
“What to wear.”
“What charity gala to attend.”
“What to say.”
“I thought…”
“…I thought it was fate.”
Jackson looked at her.
“You were manipulated too?”
She nodded once.
“My whole life.”
The younger detective suddenly entered the office.
“Mr. Mercer.”
Daniel looked up.
“What is it?”
“We’ve arrested three Harrison Global executives trying to leave the building.”
Daniel frowned.
“Only three?”
The detective nodded.
“They all had forged passports.”
Samuel sighed.
“Too late.”
Everyone turned toward him.
“What?”
“There should’ve been five.”
The detective’s radio crackled.
He listened.
Then his expression changed.
“There were five.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Where are the other two?”
The detective swallowed.
“They escaped…”
“…before the police arrived.”
Samuel closed his eyes.
“Then he’s already moving.”
Daniel looked confused.
“Victor is in custody.”
Samuel slowly shook his head.
“I’m not talking about Victor.”
Silence.
“I’m talking about…”
“…his successor.”
Charles frowned.
“Successor?”
Samuel nodded.
“Victor always trained someone.”
“Someone younger.”
“Someone smarter.”
“Someone nobody would suspect.”
Daniel quickly searched through the notebook.
“Who is it?”
Samuel looked toward me.
His expression was filled with regret.
“I never learned the name.”
“But Frank did.”
Everyone froze.
“What?”
Samuel pointed toward the leather binder from the safe.
“The answer…”
“…isn’t in my notebook.”
“It’s in Frank’s.”
Daniel rushed to the binder.
He flipped through dozens of pages.
Financial reports.
Meeting notes.
Shareholder records.
Then…
Near the very back…
He found a sealed envelope.
Unlike the others…
There was no name on the front.
Only one instruction.
Open only after Victor is arrested.
Daniel carefully opened it.
Inside…
One photograph.
One typed page.
And one handwritten sentence.
Daniel read the sentence first.
His hands immediately began shaking.
Charles grabbed the paper.
“What is it?”
Daniel couldn’t answer.
He simply handed it to me.
Frank’s handwriting read:
“If you’re reading this… the person standing closest to you is no longer the greatest danger.”
Beneath it…
A single photograph.
Everyone leaned closer.
It wasn’t Victor.
It wasn’t Natalie.
It wasn’t anyone in the room.
It was…
The young waiter from the wedding.
The same waiter who had quietly slipped the hotel keycard into my hand.
Across the bottom of the photograph…
Frank had written three chilling words.
“Never trust him.”
At that exact moment…
Every light inside Harrison Global went dark.
The emergency generators failed.
The entire building was swallowed by darkness.
Then…
Somewhere inside the blackness…
A man’s voice echoed through the office.
Soft.
Calm.
Almost amused.
“Mr. Harrison always was one move ahead…”
“…until tonight.”
A gun clicked.
Someone inside the darkness had just pulled the trigger.
PART 17 — THE SHOT IN THE DARK
The gun clicked.
Then…
BANG!
The sound exploded through the office.
Someone screamed.
Glass shattered.
For a split second, no one knew who had been hit.
The emergency lights flickered once…
Twice…
Then dim red backup lights filled the room.
I looked around wildly.
Daniel Mercer was on the floor.
Not shot.
He had tackled Jackson to the ground just as the bullet flew.
The round buried itself in the wall where Jackson had been standing less than a second earlier.
Samuel shouted,
“Everyone down!”
Another shot rang out.
BANG!
A computer monitor exploded into pieces.
The room descended into chaos.
Firefighters pulled people behind overturned desks.
Police officers drew their weapons.
“Police!”
“Drop your weapon!”
Only silence answered.
The red emergency lights finally stabilized.
I scanned the office.
Charles.
Safe.
Samuel.
Safe.
Natalie.
Curled behind the conference table, trembling.
Jackson slowly stood.
“Mom…”
“I’m okay.”
I grabbed him.
Holding him tighter than I had in years.
For one terrifying second…
I had almost lost him.
Again.
Daniel looked toward the broken office door.
“He escaped.”
The younger detective shook his head.
“No.”
“He never left.”
Everyone froze.
“What?”
The detective pointed toward the ceiling.
“The shot came from inside the building.”
“He knows the emergency corridors.”
Samuel whispered,
“Victor planned for this.”
Daniel nodded.
“No.”
“His successor did.”
Then…
A calm voice echoed through the emergency speaker system.
“Good evening…”
Every speaker in the building came alive.
The same voice.
Smooth.
Young.
Confident.
“I was hoping we’d have a little more time together.”
Jackson looked around.
“Where are you?”
The man laughed.
“Everywhere.”
Daniel rushed toward the security desk.
“The cameras.”
A technician shook his head.
“They’ve all been overridden.”
Every monitor displayed the same message.
WELCOME TO PHASE TWO
A countdown appeared beneath it.
00:29:58
Twenty-nine minutes.
Daniel frowned.
“What happens in twenty-nine minutes?”
The technician swallowed.
“I don’t know.”
Then…
Every screen changed.
The young waiter from the wedding appeared.
Still wearing his white uniform.
Except now…
He wasn’t smiling.
“My name…”
“…isn’t Ethan.”
“…or Michael.”
“…or any of the names you’ve heard.”
He removed his name tag.
“My real name…”
“…is Lucas Sterling.”
The room fell silent.
Victor’s successor.
Lucas looked directly into the camera.
“My grandfather taught me many things.”
Grandfather?
Daniel’s face went white.
“Victor has grandchildren…”
Lucas smiled.
“He taught me patience.”
“He taught me strategy.”
“He taught me never to fight for money.”
“Fight for power.”
He leaned closer.
“While all of you have been chasing Victor…”
“…I’ve been running Harrison Global.”
Charles whispered,
“No…”
Lucas nodded.
“Every email.”
“Every contract.”
“Every acquisition.”
“You all approved them.”
“You just didn’t know my name.”
Daniel searched Samuel’s notebook again.
“Lucas Sterling…”
Nothing.
Charles searched Frank’s binder.
Nothing.
Samuel slowly understood.
“Frank never found him.”
Daniel looked up.
“No.”
“He found someone…”
“…he could never identify.”
Lucas smiled.
“Exactly.”
The countdown reached:
00:27:11
Lucas continued.
“In twenty-seven minutes…”
“…every Harrison Global server will permanently erase itself.”
Daniel shouted,
“The backups!”
Lucas laughed.
“They’re already gone.”
Charles grabbed the technician.
“Disconnect the network!”
The technician stared helplessly.
“I can’t.”
“He locked us out.”
Jackson stepped toward the camera.
“What do you want?”
Lucas smiled.
“You.”
Silence.
“I don’t care about your mother.”
“I don’t care about Natalie.”
“I don’t even care about Harrison Global.”
He pointed directly into the camera.
“I want Frank Harrison’s son.”
Jackson frowned.
“Why?”
Lucas’ smile slowly disappeared.
“Because my grandfather failed.”
“My father failed.”
“So now…”
“…I finish what my family started.”
He pressed a button.
The camera feed changed.
Everyone gasped.
On the screen…
A little girl sat tied to a chair.
About seven years old.
Crying quietly.
I had never seen her before.
Lucas spoke softly.
“Meet Emma.”
Jackson looked confused.
“Who is she?”
Lucas smiled.
“You don’t recognize her?”
Natalie suddenly screamed.
“No!”
Everyone turned toward her.
Her face had gone completely white.
She whispered,
“Emma…”
“…is my daughter.”
The room froze.
Jackson stared at her in disbelief.
“Daughter?”
Natalie collapsed to her knees.
“I was going to tell you…”
“I swear I was going to tell you…”
Jackson’s voice shook.
“You have a child?”
She nodded through tears.
“She’s six years old.”
“I hid her…”
“…because Victor said he’d kill her if anyone found out.”
Lucas applauded slowly through the screen.
“Congratulations.”
“Now everyone knows.”
He smiled one last time.
“And in exactly…”
He glanced at the countdown.
00:24:59
“…twenty-five minutes…”
“…you can decide who survives.”
The screens went black.
Only the countdown remained.
No one in the room spoke.
Then Samuel looked directly at me.
His expression was filled with urgency.
“Margaret…”
“I finally remember where Frank hid the last key.”
PART 18 — THE LAST KEY
No one spoke.
The countdown glowed across every monitor in the ruined headquarters.
00:24:58
Twenty-four minutes.
Somewhere in the city…
A little girl named Emma was waiting.
Natalie could barely breathe.
“My daughter…”
“My baby…”
She looked at me with eyes filled with desperation.
“I know I don’t deserve your help.”
“I know what I’ve done.”
“But Emma has done nothing.”
“Please…”
“Please save her.”
For the first time since this nightmare began…
I no longer saw the woman who had shaved my head.
I saw a terrified mother.
Samuel Brooks leaned heavily against the wall.
His burns were getting worse.
Every breath looked painful.
“Margaret…”
“We don’t have much time.”
“You said Frank hid another key.”
Samuel nodded.
“I remembered.”
“It wasn’t a key for a safe.”
“It wasn’t for a bank.”
“It was…”
He coughed violently.
“…a master key.”
Daniel frowned.
“Master key?”
Samuel pointed toward the old workshop photograph hanging crookedly on Frank’s office wall.
“Behind it.”
Jackson rushed over.
He lifted the heavy frame.
Nothing.
Then he noticed a tiny brass screw hidden inside the molding.
He twisted it.
Click.
A narrow compartment slid open.
Inside rested a small silver key attached to a faded leather tag.
Frank’s handwriting covered the tag.
EMERGENCY ACCESS
Charles immediately recognized it.
“My God…”
“I haven’t seen one of these in twenty years.”
“What is it?” I asked.
Charles looked at me.
“It’s the original emergency key.”
“It bypasses every electronic lock inside Harrison Global.”
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“The underground control center.”
Charles nodded.
“Exactly.”
